The Hike, Take Two

My parents have been visiting since Tuesday which is why Ive had no time to post! I had to work during the week while they explored the area around Red Hook and enjoyed the warm weather. Then yesterday was my first full day off.

The first thing we did that day was sleep in! I had been having to get up early to go to work the days I worked, so sleeping in a bit was necessary.
Then Ty came over for breakfast and surprised me with a ton of fair trade/organic chocolate! (That stuff is hard to find on island) I wondered why he bought all of it, I thought that he was just being an awesome boy until later he reminded me that it was Valentines day, haha! I had completely forgotten…

Then Ty drove us to the ferry and my parents and I were off on our adventure over on St John for the day.

After we got off the ferry, we tried to see if we could rent a car for the next day to explore St. John a bit more. Its a beautiful island and I wanted to be able to drive around more but there were no cars available… Thats ok, because we changed our plans and now we are going to Coral World, an aquarium where Ty works, to troll him all day, except I wont do that maybe…

On St. John, we were able to walk to our trailhead, the same one that I smacked my knee on last time... The trail was straight up for about an hour (with stops). Once we got to the top, there were some excellent views! Almost 360 degrees, able to see St. Thomas and many of the surrounding islands.

Then we continued our hike for probably another hour to the next ridge and then down to the beach where we were able to check out the ruins of an old sugar plantation. Once we made our way to Honeymoon beach, we went for a dip in the water to cool off and relaxed. I then took my parents to the next beach over, Soloman, which was less touristy and, in my opinion, a much better beach!

I did some snorkeling there and saw a bunch of cool stuff before even hitting the coral! I saw an eel, large stingray and multiple fish that I could identify. Its fun knowing whats in the water :)

After the snorkel, I dried off as best I could and we hiked the 20 minutes back to Cruz Bay where we had some beers while listening to music, ate a delicious dinner and got real frozen yogurt!

It was a lovely day and the evening didn't disappoint in adventure either. Once we got off the ferry on St. Thomas, it started to rain. At least it held off for the day! Ty came and picked us up in the dingy and my parents loved it, even though it was raining!

I was exhausted by the end of the night and was glad to lay down, Im a little sore today from the hike which means I did some real exercise yesterday! About 4 miles in all and about 1.5 of them was up, up up! Good for the glutes :P

Red = Passion

Yesterday, I had a shit-eating grin as I was winding through local streets, pedaling and feeling the warm breeze in my hair. I recently, in the last month, moved to the DC area and have been struggling to fit in and find my place. This month, Ty and I got our own room in a place that we share with a few others that are our roommates in our new town. But there are still so many things that are missing in my life. I need yoga, rock climbing and freedom to get around on my own. On Tuesday afternoon, I took that first step at transportation freedom in the form of a two wheeled vehicle. I took the metro to Virginia which is a bit of a ride from my new home on the Maryland side. I stopped at one of the last metro stops and walked out into the sunny, nice weather. I was meeting someone from craigslist who was selling a little, red Schwinn bike. I exited the station and immediately saw the little red bike being held up by a sweet looking, older man. I introduced myself, took the bike for a...

To Brittian and Back

Today Amber, Dana and I woke up early to go on an adventure. 6:23 to be exact. How I know that is because Ty had to call me to wake Dana and I up from our very deep slumber. I sprung awake and got ready in record time to try to help Ty jump his car. Only it didn't work so we had to wake up my roommate to drive us all. The three ladies convened at the dock where our boat trip would leave. We were all a little tired but mostly excited for our long overdue adventure and being tourists for the day. We started our tip with about an hour long boat ride to Virgin Gorda, British Virgin Islands (BVI), the three of us talking about anything and everything that came to mind. Once we got to Virgin Gorda, everyone on the trip took a taxi over to the baths. The baths (BVI) are a geologic structure in which volcanic rock is pushed up near the water to create tunnels, pools, arches and grottoes. There are only two baths in the world, one being in the BVI, so it was super cool that we got to go...

Runners High

At 12:30pm, I stepped outside for the first time all day. I hadn't really even left my room until I realized that if I didnt go outside, I probably would bum it all afternoon. I put my running shoes on and bounced outside. I started walking and after I got myself settled, I started to run. After being cooped up, those first few steps of an outdoor run is so magical. The feeling of freedom, fresh air and adrenaline is fantastic. I always have a mad smile and excitement for being able to move so fast. After my first few minutes of running, thats when the exhaustion sets in. What keeps me going longer, is adventure. Do I like running? Not really. Do I enjoy exploring? Obviously. I decided to check out a new part of the power line trail that I have not seen before and ran up the hills, or on straight path, and walked down hills. I went to the beginning of the trail and back again, smiling at the other people who were also out for their afternoon walk/bike. The sun came out and it...
