Despite the dirt under my nails. Despite the bleach headache that was continuing to pound (we use SO much bleach to clean enclosures). Despite the tiredness that was dwelling. Despite the freezing temperatures. And despite the snow, I was happily running from building to building to get waters filled and make sure everything was in order for the following day. The snow was coming down in big fluffy chunks and I can probably count on one hand the times Ive been excited for snow in my adult life. Today was one of those days.
I finished the day at 5:02 pm and ran up to my room. Despite everything, I had decided to go for a run after work. I quickly took off my outer layer of snake poop, dirty mulch work clothes and put on some running clothes. Its always fun to exercise when you've got all the right gear. Two layers of clothes, the inner layer was fleece lined (oh so warm) and I was ready for that fluffy snow.
My roommate/coworker looked at me in disgust when I announced I was going for a run. "Im going to stay inside where its warm. Im probably going to make myself some nice hot decaf coffee too." She said with a sarcastic laugh. She didn't realize that I enjoy the huffing and puffing and hard work to stay fit. Today, I do admit was a bit extreme with the cold temps but when I feel motivated, I jump on it and run until I can't anymore.
I walked outside once I was ready and the snow had stopped. I frowned a little but was still ready for some exercise. I started running as soon as my feet hit the gravel and felt great.
I have had to take some time off of the sport because Ive had some problems with my knees. Recently I picked it back up again, just once a week, to stay in shape. I like to force myself to work out when Im in remote locations like this because I don't get enough exercise in my every day life. Running helps to stay sane.
Crunch, crunch, crunch. Feet hitting the gravel. My body temperature was perfect. Usually my lungs hurt from running in the cold, or my skin freezes. Today was different. No gloves, no worries. I ran for a solid mile which is the furthest Ive gone in the last few weeks. My knees were holding up. It was a day for a new route which took me next to the Rest Stop were I got some silly looks but I was unstoppable.
Crunch, crunch...crunch.........crunch..........crunch, slowing to a walk. Heartbeat slowing. I walked for a little and then started noticing little flecks of snow falling through the sky. I looked up, the sky was pinkish, light blue and the little pieces of snow hit my face and melted. I closed my eyes and smiled. How can I be warm and happy with this snow stuff? It didnt matter, take advantage of this moment, I thought. I started jogging again as little pieces of the frozen rain melted against my warm skin. When have I ever ran in snow? Maybe never. I finished that run in the snow. Celebrating what little bit of progress I had made today, I stretched on the stairs and bounded through the door.
"That felt great."
