The Blender Incident

A good blender is like a good friend. When you find one that does all the right things, you never let it go and use it all the time. You can't get enough of it. But when you have a blender thats not so great well, you get immensely annoyed at its shortcomings and don't understand how it can suck so bad. You ignore it and kinda hope it'll go away...

I LOVE smoothies. I think of different combos of fruits and veggies that will be the healthiest and most delicious. I could have a smoothie a day and not be sad about it.

Y'all know about the Vitamix my parents have. Or you should know. I am obsessed with that thing. That blender is like the bestest of friends. Its perfect in every way and I want to hang out with it every day. That being said, its going to be a long time before I get a Vitamix of my own. Good things come at high costs (when it comes to blenders) and blenders are hard to fit in your carry-on.

Anyway, Vitamix = great blender, great smoothies = happy me. You get the idea.

The other day while chatting with my roomies, they mentioned, not one, but TWO blenders that this household is in possession of. They also didn't hesitate to mention how awesome said blenders are. So, I very excitedly started brainstorming different smoothies I could make over the weekend.

I went to bed last night dreaming of my breakfast fruit smoothie and almost jumped out of bed when I remembered my dreams. Smoothie time!

I chopped up some of the leftover fruits along with some frozen blueberries and orange juice and put them into the blender that got the best recommendation. It was a little bullet style blender that was the perfect size for me. I attached the cup to the motor and clicked the on switch... nothing happened. I turned the dial every which way and my fruit was still intact.  So, I took off the cup to inspect the problem. There was a piece missing so the blade would not attach to the motor! I spent 5 minutes exploring the kitchen to find said piece and no luck...

Plan B. Good thing there were two blenders or I would have had a sad morning. I poured my concoction into the other blender which was a worn down plastic normal size blender. Many of the pieces were chipping off; this blender had seen better days for sure. I pressed the "blend" button to blend my fruits together and the noise that came out of the thing was so loud that my ears screamed at me. I fumbled to find the off switch and stood for a minute getting my hearing back. The blender must not have been on correctly so I picked it up and replaced it back on the base. I hesitated to push the "on" button for fear of the hideously loud screeching but when I did, it wasn't horribly loud and the fruit was being chopped into bits! It worked!

The smoothie was in fact smooth and frothy. This blender was on my friend list.

All day I had been looking forward to my "dessert" smoothie with banana, vanilla silk and chocolate chips. Sounds delicious right?

I pulled out my friend and added the ingredients with a few ice cubes to chill. The blender was louder than I remembered and I had to plug my ears while pressing the "on" button and holding the pitcher on the base. Also, it was having the worst time chopping up the ice and chips. I did the whole shake-and-replace method to get the chunky bits to the blade but it just didn't want to happen. Also, I did mention the oldness of the thing earlier but I didn't realize that the two pieces that came together to make the blade turn (like the screwdriver meeting the screw head), was made of plastic as well, was stripped and flinging small chunks of plastic everywhere, not in the smoothie.

Smoothie was good I guess, but not perfection. This blender is at the bottom of my friends list unfortunately...

Red = Passion

Yesterday, I had a shit-eating grin as I was winding through local streets, pedaling and feeling the warm breeze in my hair. I recently, in the last month, moved to the DC area and have been struggling to fit in and find my place. This month, Ty and I got our own room in a place that we share with a few others that are our roommates in our new town. But there are still so many things that are missing in my life. I need yoga, rock climbing and freedom to get around on my own. On Tuesday afternoon, I took that first step at transportation freedom in the form of a two wheeled vehicle. I took the metro to Virginia which is a bit of a ride from my new home on the Maryland side. I stopped at one of the last metro stops and walked out into the sunny, nice weather. I was meeting someone from craigslist who was selling a little, red Schwinn bike. I exited the station and immediately saw the little red bike being held up by a sweet looking, older man. I introduced myself, took the bike for a...

Runners High

At 12:30pm, I stepped outside for the first time all day. I hadn't really even left my room until I realized that if I didnt go outside, I probably would bum it all afternoon. I put my running shoes on and bounced outside. I started walking and after I got myself settled, I started to run. After being cooped up, those first few steps of an outdoor run is so magical. The feeling of freedom, fresh air and adrenaline is fantastic. I always have a mad smile and excitement for being able to move so fast. After my first few minutes of running, thats when the exhaustion sets in. What keeps me going longer, is adventure. Do I like running? Not really. Do I enjoy exploring? Obviously. I decided to check out a new part of the power line trail that I have not seen before and ran up the hills, or on straight path, and walked down hills. I went to the beginning of the trail and back again, smiling at the other people who were also out for their afternoon walk/bike. The sun came out and it...

To Brittian and Back

Today Amber, Dana and I woke up early to go on an adventure. 6:23 to be exact. How I know that is because Ty had to call me to wake Dana and I up from our very deep slumber. I sprung awake and got ready in record time to try to help Ty jump his car. Only it didn't work so we had to wake up my roommate to drive us all. The three ladies convened at the dock where our boat trip would leave. We were all a little tired but mostly excited for our long overdue adventure and being tourists for the day. We started our tip with about an hour long boat ride to Virgin Gorda, British Virgin Islands (BVI), the three of us talking about anything and everything that came to mind. Once we got to Virgin Gorda, everyone on the trip took a taxi over to the baths. The baths (BVI) are a geologic structure in which volcanic rock is pushed up near the water to create tunnels, pools, arches and grottoes. There are only two baths in the world, one being in the BVI, so it was super cool that we got to go...
