Shout Out to the Good Places to Work

This post is going to be word vomit that is dedicated to all the places Ive worked that know how its done. All those places that respect their workers and have a great working environment. If I want to start my own company, Im learning from the best!

So, its amazing waking up in the morning and not dreading heading to work. I mean, nobody likes waking up in the morning, but Im always excited to see my coworkers and figure out what we are doing for the day. One factor of a good company, you like what you do and look forward to work.

Today, I woke up to a phone call from a number I did not know so I let it go to voicemail. When I received the voicemail I listened right away and heard the dining hall supervisor asking for my help today as they were short-staffed. I rolled out of bed and got dressed right away. We all work together for a common cause and when they need my help, Ill be there to help! I got to the dining hall a little early hoping to grab some quick breakfast and tea, but once I got in the door there was tons to do! I received a huge thank you for the help and was told what to do. I set up tables, prepared food, washed dishes, stuffed hot-dogs and salted french fries all while listening to music and chatting with the kitchen staff.

By the time to lunch rush had ended, I was still running around trying to get things done. Then I forced myself to take a lunch break and by that time, I was STARVING and inhaled my food so fast that I couldn't talk. A minute later, I was sitting on a chair completely exhausted.

Things slowed down and I was able to take a breath. Throughout the day, I received many "thank you's" for helping out. Even though I felt like it was my job to help, it wasn't expected and was greatly appreciated. That is another positive attribute of a good company, your time is not expected, but appreciated. It makes me feel good for what I've done and makes me want to help out whenever I can.

My coworkers are all positive, intelligent, silly, kind people and are excellent to work with and befriend. Working with them makes for little to no stress on the job. I dont have to worry about mis-understandings or mis-communication. We work well together. Third positive attribute about a good place of work.

My bosses trust that I know how to do my job too. They are excited about what I have learned at previous jobs and want to know what I can bring to the table. They WANT me to better the place! Having the respect from the people who hired me makes me feel great about what I do and makes me want to do even better for them! These are more things that make a great company.

Ive been thinking a lot about what makes a great company. What makes a person go above and beyond for a place and what makes a person want to work. Ive worked at great companies and Ive worked at places that a lot to improve upon. My work ethic was completely different at both places. I work so much harder when I feel appreciated, but don't we all?

I want to be the organization where people are proud to work there. Where people are excited to go to work in the morning and feel appreciated. I want people to express themselves in their work at my organization. I want to be the good organization!

Red = Passion

Yesterday, I had a shit-eating grin as I was winding through local streets, pedaling and feeling the warm breeze in my hair. I recently, in the last month, moved to the DC area and have been struggling to fit in and find my place. This month, Ty and I got our own room in a place that we share with a few others that are our roommates in our new town. But there are still so many things that are missing in my life. I need yoga, rock climbing and freedom to get around on my own. On Tuesday afternoon, I took that first step at transportation freedom in the form of a two wheeled vehicle. I took the metro to Virginia which is a bit of a ride from my new home on the Maryland side. I stopped at one of the last metro stops and walked out into the sunny, nice weather. I was meeting someone from craigslist who was selling a little, red Schwinn bike. I exited the station and immediately saw the little red bike being held up by a sweet looking, older man. I introduced myself, took the bike for a...

Runners High

At 12:30pm, I stepped outside for the first time all day. I hadn't really even left my room until I realized that if I didnt go outside, I probably would bum it all afternoon. I put my running shoes on and bounced outside. I started walking and after I got myself settled, I started to run. After being cooped up, those first few steps of an outdoor run is so magical. The feeling of freedom, fresh air and adrenaline is fantastic. I always have a mad smile and excitement for being able to move so fast. After my first few minutes of running, thats when the exhaustion sets in. What keeps me going longer, is adventure. Do I like running? Not really. Do I enjoy exploring? Obviously. I decided to check out a new part of the power line trail that I have not seen before and ran up the hills, or on straight path, and walked down hills. I went to the beginning of the trail and back again, smiling at the other people who were also out for their afternoon walk/bike. The sun came out and it...

To Brittian and Back

Today Amber, Dana and I woke up early to go on an adventure. 6:23 to be exact. How I know that is because Ty had to call me to wake Dana and I up from our very deep slumber. I sprung awake and got ready in record time to try to help Ty jump his car. Only it didn't work so we had to wake up my roommate to drive us all. The three ladies convened at the dock where our boat trip would leave. We were all a little tired but mostly excited for our long overdue adventure and being tourists for the day. We started our tip with about an hour long boat ride to Virgin Gorda, British Virgin Islands (BVI), the three of us talking about anything and everything that came to mind. Once we got to Virgin Gorda, everyone on the trip took a taxi over to the baths. The baths (BVI) are a geologic structure in which volcanic rock is pushed up near the water to create tunnels, pools, arches and grottoes. There are only two baths in the world, one being in the BVI, so it was super cool that we got to go...
