Parasailing at Sunset in Thailand

Thursday was our last unplanned day to explore Phuket and we wanted to soak up the sun! Brookie sent us to Karron beach nearby.

When we got to the beach it was a very very hot day so we decided to walk along the shops side of the beach to catch what little bit of shade there was. You guessed it, I bought more sarongs (addiction) and the more you buy the better deal you can get! I also decided that this day was the perfect day to get the local ice cream.

The ice cream is prepared right in front of you on a cold plate and there are very simple ingredients, your flavoring and cream. There were dozens of flavors from fruit to candy to chocolate and of course I wanted the Nutella flavor (another addiction of mine). They put your flavor on the cold plate and then pour the cream on top and try to contain the liquid. After a few seconds, the cream begins to harden and thats when they start scooping up and mixing the ice cream. Some of the "ice cream makers" have a rhythm that makes a cool beat and other times they just curl the ice cream and then chop! In the end, once its pretty ice-y, they flatten the ice cream out and then form it into curls that they put standing up in a bowl. Its very delicious and creamy and perfect for a warm day. Ty and I ate ours in the shade on the beach.

After our delicious treat, our spot got attacked by ants who wanted our leftovers so we decided to find another spot closer to the beach so we could go play in the water. We found a nice spot in the shade and Ty ran into the waves. The water was the perfect temperature on that hot day. I love just being able to lounge in the water and not get cold. After I lounged a bit, dodged some waves and Ty did some wave surfing, we found a shower to rinse off.

We wanted to find a place for dinner that had pad Thai because we figured we should eat this dish while in Thailand. There were many places hassling us to join them for dinner while we read through their menus. I would much prefer if they left me alone to glance through the menu but not in Thailand!

Once we found a few places that we thought we might like, we went to watch the sunset. There were only a few clouds in the way and it made for a beautiful landscape. Many people were parasailing and that was interesting to watch as well. Usually there was a Thai man who jumped on the back of the chute to steer especially during landing, and he wasn't strapped on at all, just sitting on the wires!

We were starving once the sun set, but the food wasn't anything to write home about, and it was more expensive than other meals (probably cause it was on the beach...). We were both exhaust from our day in the sun so we decided to try to get a cab back home.

GrabTaxi wasn't picking us up and we tried to see what the Tuktuks would offer us but they were way too expensive... Tuktuks are taxis that are like mini trucks with benches in the back so they can easily take passengers around. They tend to be more expensive and without a meter because they gear towards tourists.

We were having issues getting all the way back to our place so we ended up sharing a tuktuk to another, closer, beach town with a Swedish couple. They were very nice people and us being Americans, they wanted to talk politics. The world is watching us my friends...

In Patong, we were easily able to get a GrabTaxi back to our place and it was another long, exhausting day where all we wanted to do was pass out! The next two days would be long busy, planned days as well so we needed our sleep. Friday 6am pickup for rock climbing!

Dear Old Friend

Dear old friend, I think about you a lot. As I go about my day I think about how something might make you laugh or say aloud an inside joke that no one understands. I smile as I remember a fond memory. But then I go about my day. At night is when I think about trying to reach out to you again. About what I should have said or what I should say to try to understand why we are no longer close. I come up with scripts in my head about a letter I should write you or a voice mail I should leave, so you know how much I miss you. Sometimes I get angry. Why did this friendship not last forever like I was sure it would? What did I ever do to be treated this way? How could you just leave me alone? Do you even care how I am? I ask myself these questions over and over. I get mad. Then I think. I think that you must not have done this to hurt me; sometimes people just drift apart. That you probably think about me sometimes too. That perhaps, sometimes you smile at an old memory we share. Gut...

Runners High

At 12:30pm, I stepped outside for the first time all day. I hadn't really even left my room until I realized that if I didnt go outside, I probably would bum it all afternoon. I put my running shoes on and bounced outside. I started walking and after I got myself settled, I started to run. After being cooped up, those first few steps of an outdoor run is so magical. The feeling of freedom, fresh air and adrenaline is fantastic. I always have a mad smile and excitement for being able to move so fast. After my first few minutes of running, thats when the exhaustion sets in. What keeps me going longer, is adventure. Do I like running? Not really. Do I enjoy exploring? Obviously. I decided to check out a new part of the power line trail that I have not seen before and ran up the hills, or on straight path, and walked down hills. I went to the beginning of the trail and back again, smiling at the other people who were also out for their afternoon walk/bike. The sun came out and it...

Longest Day Ever

This is the longest day of my life. Literally. No, like actually literally. Or maybe a bunch of the shortest days of my life...anyway... We started off in Wisconsin, not early but it wasn't leisurely either. Then the bus to the airport in Chicago where we were to catch our first flight to shanghai. When we checked in we were informed that we were given an illegal flight through china on our way back home. Apparently you can't even have a layover in an airport for longer than 24 hours in China. The airline was nice about it and helped us in anyway they could but they told us we would have to call our booking agency because it was their fault, not the airline itself. Good thing we gave ourselves plenty of time in the airport because we needed all of that time to figure it out. I called the company that gave us our tickets and the first thing the gentleman said was that we would have to pay a change fee on top of the price for the new ticket. I was not happy with that so I inquir...
