Sand, Sunsets and Sass

Beach day was wednesday where we relaxed in the perfect sunshine while listening to the waves roll in aaaand some construction happening close by. It took us an hour to get there thanks to the bumper to bumper traffic due to all the spring breakers. The beach was packed more than my friend had ever seen it which is how we ended up next to the construction. I was mesmerized by the big trucks just moving dirt around. I wanted to ask what they were doing because it looked like piles of sand were just getting moved around with various equipment.

Then the disel fuel started blowing our way and we had to pack up camp and move to a new location. There were four of us at this point, friends of friends of friends and for one, it was her first time on the beach! So we all decided that she needed a more peaceful place for her first time. We found a tranquil place that wasn't too crowded and then my friend and I went to go grab some gelato! I walked in and was amazed at the rows of flavors. Together we tried 8 flavors before we decided on something absolutely delicious. Walking back along the beach with our slowly melting gelato was one of those perfect moments.

As the sun set, we played paddle ball. My friends friends were great. We all laughed at each other when we hit the ball to an invisible player or swung at the air, completely missing the ball. Its nice to not feel pressured to be any good at something!

The beach became packed for the orange sunset and then quickly, we were some of the only people there.

Dinnertime! We went to a Mexican place near the beach. There we had many adventures. We didnt get a waitress right away but heard the waitress tell the table next to us that there were no chips. No chips at a mexican restaurant!? Oh no...

When we finally got our drink order, the woman told us someone else would be back to take our order only to return shortly and say she would be our waitress. We ordered our dinners someone ordered guac only to have it come out with no chips. It was hilarious. No chips or anything to dip. Within minutes, our waitress brought out chips (where did those come from??) and a dessert to apologize. The dessert was pretty good and so was dinner, although there were no black or refried beans! The first plate came out and the waitress said in an awesomely sassy voice "so, we only have pinto beans so if any of you ordered any other beans, thats what you're going to get... sorry." We could only laugh at the oddity of it all.  Because we were waited on so late to begin with, we were the last table there and they started to clean up as we were sitting there still. It was quite an entertaining evening at the Mexican Cantina...

Red = Passion

Yesterday, I had a shit-eating grin as I was winding through local streets, pedaling and feeling the warm breeze in my hair. I recently, in the last month, moved to the DC area and have been struggling to fit in and find my place. This month, Ty and I got our own room in a place that we share with a few others that are our roommates in our new town. But there are still so many things that are missing in my life. I need yoga, rock climbing and freedom to get around on my own. On Tuesday afternoon, I took that first step at transportation freedom in the form of a two wheeled vehicle. I took the metro to Virginia which is a bit of a ride from my new home on the Maryland side. I stopped at one of the last metro stops and walked out into the sunny, nice weather. I was meeting someone from craigslist who was selling a little, red Schwinn bike. I exited the station and immediately saw the little red bike being held up by a sweet looking, older man. I introduced myself, took the bike for a...

Guatemala: Day One Adventure

The following is a conglomeration of journal writings that I made about my travel day to San Marcos, Guatemala and some additions to make it all run together smoothly: 11/5/15 6:60am Chicago I JUST made my first flight. It helped that the dude behind me in the security line was on my flight. We chatted a bit about travel and it eased my mind a little. I get so stressed out when Im not early... I had to take the earliest bus from Milwaukee at 4:30 am. I slept three hours. 10:55am ATL I think I smell... I didn't do that deodorant thing this morning. Whatever. I had less than an hour layover and had to run through the huge ATL airport to get to my gate. I got there with a bit of time though which is nice. Im between two not so fun humans. One is a very large man who thinks he can have half of my seat (though at least he seems nice) and an older woman who I don't think speaks good spanish or engligh. Also, when she's passed out its fine but as soon as she wakes up, the ...

Welcome to Kentucky

So Tyler and I have been driving for two days to get me to Kentucky tonight for my internship at the Reptile Zoo! (Which Im pretty excited for by the way) Its dark out and we are excited to almost be in Kentucky after passing through so many other states the whole day. We drive over this hill and this is what we see: The sky is all lit up orange and its kind of flickering and both Ty and I go “oh F***” Something is on fire and we think theres a horrible exploding accident on the highway. As we come down this hill, we notice that there is no horrible accident but theres fire from a factory. The orange lights are lighting up the foggy night sky and its glaring. Orange lights, smoke stacks and fires from the factory are all over and we are disgusted. It is the ugliest thing I have ever seen. There is a billboard with an american flag (‘MERICA!) and we find out its an oil factory. On the other part of the highway is a sign as we come over the bridge: Welcome to Kentucky.  Not...
