Long travels to the Galapagos

We woke up at 3:30 am to make sure we caught our flight at 6. Needless to say, I was tired. We had to annoyingly fly from Boston to Cincinnati to Atlanta and then Quito. I tried working my magic on the Delta associates so we could fly later in the day direct to ATL buuuut I was only able to waive the change fee, not the difference in fare which was almost $300 each. So thats why we had to get up at 3:30 am.

The flights were normal and the layovers were long. I tried sleeping in the airport in the corner but it was too cold and I can't sleep in weird places like I used to when I was in college.

In ATL we met up with my parents and Jake and Jean. This was the whole group for the first part of the trip. We were going to get into Quito and then try really hard to see as much as we could in our overnight layover. Then our flight was delayed an hour (now arriving at 12:30 am) and many of us were feeling under the weather (me included). This was going to be a struggle.

I tried to sleep for the whole flight but probably only napped for a total of 30 minutes. Thats how sleeping on an airplane works for me. But any kind of rest helps!

We got into Quito super late, grabbed our bags and looked for my name on a whiteboard. We had a van service organized through our AirBnb host (who was amazing!) to take us to our apartment.

Extremely tired, we arrived at our place around 1:45 am to our friendly hosts who helped us get settled and answer all our questions. Finally after 2 am (and almost 24 hours that I had been up), we passed out and set our alarms for 8am.

Only the most dedicated get up and out to explore a city for a few hours before catching a plane. My dad, Jake, Ty and I left the apartment to walk around and explore Quito. We wandered the streets, stopped in to a very hipster coffee shop and saw some beautiful churches. I also stepped in dog poop, twice, that morning... It was everywhere! So many stray dogs!

We then had a quick breakfast before heading back to the airport to finish our journey to the Galapagos.

While waiting for our flight, I was able to successfully order a vegetarian lunch (in Spanish) and scrape most of the dog scat off my shoe in the bathroom...

The flight to the Galapagos included more "trying-to-nap" napping and a little turbulence and then the pilot announced that we were about to land. Looking out the window we saw beautiful blue waters and small islands popping out of the ocean.

Whenever I land in a new, exciting place, I always get sentimental. What an amazing opportunity this is to be landing in the friggin Galapagos. How is my life so awesome that I get to be HERE right now? What amazing adventures lay ahead?! Its always that moment right before the wheels hit the ground and you can still see pretty far from the plane in the sky. Wow. How incredible is it to be landing in this place, right now...

Red = Passion

Yesterday, I had a shit-eating grin as I was winding through local streets, pedaling and feeling the warm breeze in my hair. I recently, in the last month, moved to the DC area and have been struggling to fit in and find my place. This month, Ty and I got our own room in a place that we share with a few others that are our roommates in our new town. But there are still so many things that are missing in my life. I need yoga, rock climbing and freedom to get around on my own. On Tuesday afternoon, I took that first step at transportation freedom in the form of a two wheeled vehicle. I took the metro to Virginia which is a bit of a ride from my new home on the Maryland side. I stopped at one of the last metro stops and walked out into the sunny, nice weather. I was meeting someone from craigslist who was selling a little, red Schwinn bike. I exited the station and immediately saw the little red bike being held up by a sweet looking, older man. I introduced myself, took the bike for a...

Guatemala: Day One Adventure

The following is a conglomeration of journal writings that I made about my travel day to San Marcos, Guatemala and some additions to make it all run together smoothly: 11/5/15 6:60am Chicago I JUST made my first flight. It helped that the dude behind me in the security line was on my flight. We chatted a bit about travel and it eased my mind a little. I get so stressed out when Im not early... I had to take the earliest bus from Milwaukee at 4:30 am. I slept three hours. 10:55am ATL I think I smell... I didn't do that deodorant thing this morning. Whatever. I had less than an hour layover and had to run through the huge ATL airport to get to my gate. I got there with a bit of time though which is nice. Im between two not so fun humans. One is a very large man who thinks he can have half of my seat (though at least he seems nice) and an older woman who I don't think speaks good spanish or engligh. Also, when she's passed out its fine but as soon as she wakes up, the ...

Welcome to Kentucky

So Tyler and I have been driving for two days to get me to Kentucky tonight for my internship at the Reptile Zoo! (Which Im pretty excited for by the way) Its dark out and we are excited to almost be in Kentucky after passing through so many other states the whole day. We drive over this hill and this is what we see: The sky is all lit up orange and its kind of flickering and both Ty and I go “oh F***” Something is on fire and we think theres a horrible exploding accident on the highway. As we come down this hill, we notice that there is no horrible accident but theres fire from a factory. The orange lights are lighting up the foggy night sky and its glaring. Orange lights, smoke stacks and fires from the factory are all over and we are disgusted. It is the ugliest thing I have ever seen. There is a billboard with an american flag (‘MERICA!) and we find out its an oil factory. On the other part of the highway is a sign as we come over the bridge: Welcome to Kentucky.  Not...
